Write to Honour Yourself
Hello Dear One,
As you open this know I’m sending you so much love. Imagine a proper cuddle - the ones where you hang on for so long you can feel the other person’s heartbeat. One of those. I hope you feel seen. It’s why I write these letters. Me, a human being, connecting to you, another human being. If there’s anything this last year’s taught me it’s how we can find connection in the most unexpected and beautiful ways.
Today marks a year since the U.K. went into lockdown. It’s an odd kind of anniversary, milestone...whatever we call it. A whole year of our lives. The next word hangs there, doesn’t it? Wasted. Such an inaccurate story. When my brain comes up with narratives like this I recognise them for what they are: unhelpful and ridiculous.
Personally, I’m in the same flat, doing the same job, surrounded - mostly - by the same people. But that is not my story. I’ve been growing exponentially, healing, stepping into owning who I truly am. The lessons from this year will stay with me for the rest of my life. And the laughs.
For today’s letter, I wrote a list of things which have shifted for me - but the truth is you’d don’t need it. It’s easy to compare, to think about the people who ‘did more’ than us, to write off our achievements. It’s already happening over on Instagram. I don’t want to encourage it.
Instead let me tell you this: every day you got out of bed deserves to be honoured. Every time you thought you couldn’t take another hour sitting in the same room, struggled through a shift, adapted your business, took care of a child (or pet), found lightness or showed kindness to another human being - all of it. We’ve all been challenged, felt the grief of missed experiences, people, places. But your experience is unique. Make this your story.
And if you struggle with acknowledging yourself like this you’re not alone. Check out my previous letter, or imagine telling a supportive friend (who lives in a miraculous corner of the planet unaffected by the pandemic) about everything you’ve done. It’s a lot, right?
I hope it helps.
A final suggestion - dance out your emotions today. I even made you a playlist. Release and create space for what is to come.
Thanks for being here and being you.
All love,
Jo
